…To spotlight Nigerian creators and stories

Facebook has partnered with Nollywood filmmaker and actor, Funke Akindele, for the London and Lagos premieres of her new film, The Four.

The partnership will support the film’s world premiere in London and its homecoming premiere in Lagos, bringing creators, celebrities and audiences together, Meta said in a statement.

It said the collaboration would celebrate Nigerian storytelling and the creators and communities helping local stories reach audiences around the world.

“Facebook has always been about connecting people, and our partnership with Funke Akindele brings that to life through film,” said Oluwasola Obagbemi, Head of Communications, Sub-Saharan Africa, Meta.

“Creators on Facebook can reach a global audience, build real connections with their fans and earn money from the original content they share,” he said.

Obagbemi added that the partnership would celebrate creators shaping culture and support those sharing original and engaging content on the platform.

Akindele said the collaboration recognised the audiences who had supported her career in acting, producing and directing.

“African cinema has always had beautiful stories for the world to enjoy, and it’s exciting to have Facebook as a partner in bringing these stories to even more audiences globally,” she said.

Meta said its presence at the premieres would spotlight Nigerian creators at home and in the diaspora. A creator-hosted space will also capture content on how they use Facebook to connect with younger audiences and share Nigerian stories and culture beyond the country.

Akindele announced the partnership on her Facebook page, while Meta said behind-the-scenes content from the London and Lagos premieres would be shared on its Africa page and the Facebook pages of Akindele and other partners.

The partnership, Meta said, celebrates Nollywood’s global reach and the creators and communities helping Nigerian stories travel.
