The Lagos State Government has expressed profound condolences to renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family over the tragic death of her son, Nkanu, following a medical incident at a private healthcare facility in Lagos on January 6, 2026.
On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, the administration extends heartfelt sympathy to the family during this extremely difficult time. “The loss of a child is a profound tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Adichie and her family,” a statement from the government said.
Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on medical negligence, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
HEFAMAA has commenced the investigation, including an on-site review of the facility, and will examine all allegations relating to the incident. The Agency will collaborate closely with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a comprehensive and credible review process.
The investigation will focus on adherence to clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the responsibilities of all parties involved. Findings will be made public promptly in the interest of transparency and accountability.
The Lagos State Government assured the public that any individual or institution found culpable of negligence or regulatory violations will face the full force of the law. Meanwhile, the government urges citizens to avoid speculation while the investigation proceeds, emphasizing the importance of due process.
Lagos State remains steadfast in safeguarding the health, safety, and rights of all residents, and in continuously strengthening oversight of medical practice to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
