Clean energy technology startup, , has expanded into Nigeria with the rollout of its solar-powered battery rental solution aimed at addressing the country’s persistent electricity challenges.
The company said it has established operations across seven locations in Lagos in partnership with , operator of Mobil service stations.
According to the company, the service stations will serve as rental and charging hubs for its solar-powered battery infrastructure targeted at households and small businesses.
The expansion comes amid Nigeria’s worsening energy access deficit, with millions of homes and businesses still relying heavily on expensive petrol and diesel generators for electricity supply.
Citing World Bank data, bPOWERd noted that about 43 per cent of Nigerians still lack access to the national grid.
The company explained that while operating a small entry-level generator could cost as much as N10,000 daily, its battery rental solution provides up to 12 hours of electricity for as low as N3,000 per day.
Under the model, customers can rent portable solar-charged batteries through a refundable N15,000 deposit.
Daily rental rates start from N1,500 for a 300Wh battery and N3,000 for a 1,000Wh battery.The batteries are designed to power basic household and business appliances, including lighting, televisions, fans, refrigerators and small business equipment.
Managing Director of bPOWERd, Jonathan Lule, said the company’s mission was to support households and small businesses struggling with unreliable and expensive power supply.
“Small businesses sit at the centre of everyday economic activity, yet many continue to operate against the backdrop of unstable and expensive power.“
At a time of continued grid instability, bPOWERd is helping households and small and medium-sized enterprises access dependable pay-per-use power they can rely on,” he said.
Head of bp Global West Africa, Oluwole Ogidan, said the initiative aligns with efforts to provide affordable and flexible energy solutions tailored to local realities.
“Our focus is on delivering diversified energy solutions that are affordable, resilient and adaptable to how people live and work.
“Beyond expanding access to reliable power, this rollout also supports the growth of a local green workforce through on-site sales roles and partnerships with Nigerian solar technicians,”
he stated.bPOWERd, which first launched in South Africa in 2025, disclosed that it recorded more than 125,000 battery rentals within its first 12 months of operation.
The company said its distributed energy model was designed to provide scalable and affordable backup power solutions without the high upfront costs associated with conventional alternatives.
