In a decisive push to bolster emergency healthcare delivery, the Lagos State Government has commissioned ten new pre-fabricated ambulance stations under the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS.
Strategically located across key communities, the facilities mark a major step in advancing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s health reform agenda.
Unveiled during a formal ceremony in Agege, one of the new locations, the launch was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi.
The project is the latest milestone in the state’s bid to cut emergency response times and improve access to life-saving pre-hospital care.
Dr. Ogunyemi declared: “These ambulance stations are more than structures, they represent immediate hope for those in crisis.
“Positioning these points closer to residents ensures quicker access to emergency medical attention, which can be the difference between life and death.”
The new points are sited in Agege, Agbowa, Masha (Surulere), Badagry, Mile 2, Epe, Shomolu, Igando, Iba, and Ibeju-Lekki, with modular designs enabling mobility, fast deployment, and resilience to harsh environmental conditions.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, described the commissioning as part of a broader strategic vision. “This is not just about ten points; it’s about building an integrated emergency response network,” he noted.
“We are creating systems, expanding ambulance coverage, reinforcing trauma care, and investing in the people behind the sirens.”
Dr. Ogboye reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainability and praised the LASAMBUS team for their continued dedication. He also hailed community involvement, singling out Mr. Moshood Akintayo, a former emergency victim who voluntarily beautified the Agege site in appreciation of LASAMBUS’ life-saving intervention.
Hamibra Integrated Nigeria Ltd, the contractor behind the project, showcased the innovative features of the new prefabricated points. CEO Mr. Sulaiman Hammed explained that the design includes anti-burglar steel structures, climate-adaptive interiors, and heavy-duty ambulance bays capable of withstanding over 50 years of use“These units are built with Lagos in mind, weatherproof, tamper-proof, and strategically flexible,” said Mr. Hammed. “We are grateful to the state government for trusting local innovation.”
Deputy Director of Nursing, Mrs. Rasheedat Saka, who represented LASAMBUS, described the development as a morale booster for frontline responders. “We can now operate in more comfort, respond more quickly, and serve Lagosians even better,” she said, urging residents to use emergency toll-free numbers 767 and 112 for prompt assistance.
Mr. Akintayo, who shared an emotional account of his near-death experience and LASAMBUS’ swift intervention, left a powerful impression on attendees. “They didn’t just save me; they gave me another chance,” he said. “Giving back through this gesture is the least I could do.”
With today’s additions, Lagos now boasts 16 prefabricated ambulance stations, including six previously launched. The government has affirmed its intent to scale the initiative across all local government areas, reinforcing its commitment to responsive and equitable healthcare.
