PalmPay has urged digital finance users to take greater responsibility for protecting their accounts, saying customer awareness is essential to preventing fraud as cyber threats become more sophisticated.
The call was made by the company’s Managing Director in Nigeria, Chika Nwosu, during the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre’s 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness Walk in Abuja.
PalmPay supported the walk for the second consecutive year. Held on October 17, the event formed part of a three-day programme themed, “Towards a Resilient Cyberspace.”
Nwosu said fraudsters were increasingly using tactics such as phishing and social engineering to deceive people, making it important for customers to know how to identify suspicious activity and protect their personal information.
“As cyber threats such as phishing and social engineering become increasingly sophisticated, equipping people with the knowledge and tools to recognise and prevent fraud is more important than ever,” he said.
He said PalmPay’s customer education campaign, “PalmPay Dey For You,” advises users to recognise scams, contact the company only through its official support channels and keep their personal identification numbers, passwords and one-time passwords confidential.
“Through our PalmPay Dey For You campaign, we educate customers on recognising scams, using our official support channels, and keeping their PINs, passwords and OTPs confidential,” Nwosu said.
He added that security systems needed to be supported by informed customers.
“Technology alone cannot eliminate cybercrime without proactive customer education,” he said, calling for collective action to make the digital space safer.
Nwosu commended the NPF-NCCC for its efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness and said combining security measures with public education could reduce vulnerabilities and build trust in digital services.
Also speaking at the event, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Kenechukwu Onwuemelie said the awareness campaign reflected the Inspector-General of Police’s commitment to a broad approach to internal security.
He said the approach included public sensitisation, stakeholder collaboration and preventive measures, and urged Nigerians to follow the campaign’s message: “Think Before You Click and Verify Before You Share.”
PalmPay said it also encourages customers to use security features available in the app’s Security Centre to protect their accounts. The company said its fraud prevention initiatives were aimed at helping Nigerians transact with greater confidence.
