The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has teamed up with leading fintech company, PalmPay, to launch the Youth Data Protection Awareness and Training, YDPAT, programme. This new initiative aims to train one million Nigerian youths over the next three years on data protection, cybersecurity, and digital rights. The goal is to build a generation that prioritizes privacy and can succeed in the digital economy.
During the official launch, the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande, praised PalmPay for its commitment to digital empowerment. “This is about creating a generation that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and globally competitive,” he said.
“Awareness of the Nigerian Data Protection Act, NDPA, 2023 is still low, and we have a shortage of certified Data Protection Officers. YDPAT is a timely and bold intervention.”
PalmPay’s Managing Director, Mr. Chika Nwosu, highlighted the company’s long-term dedication to privacy and youth empowerment.
“At PalmPay, we believe data protection is just as important as technological innovation,” he stated.
“We build privacy safeguards into every product we develop. Through YDPAT, we’re not only raising awareness but also giving young Nigerians access to mentorship, internships, and other opportunities through our existing youth initiatives, like the Purple Woman campaign and Passing the Baton CSR.”
The YDPAT programme will start with digital literacy campaigns in Northern Nigeria before expanding to other regions. Participants will receive structured training on data privacy, responsible digital practices, and the NDPA 2023.
This partnership is a strategic move to protect digital identities while preparing young Nigerians for the opportunities of a tech-driven future.
